The most common reason given to me for failure to regularly consume breakfast is having 'no time in the morning'.

There is good reason for breakfast often being cited as the most important meal of the day. Breakfast (doing what it says on the tin) breaks the overnight fast, therefore, replenishing carbohydrate and protein stores that will have become depleted during sleep. As well as providing fuel for the day and much needed glucose for brain function, common breakfast foods such as oats have numerous other positive impacts on health. Consuming a well-balanced breakfast is an important factor of a healthy, balanced diet.

I understand that athletes have very hectic schedules and often are required to travel long distances very early in the morning for training or other commitments. But ensuring a good breakfast will fuel training and help meet energy demands.

Overnight oats are a game changer when it comes to not having enough time to prepare a good breakfast in the morning. All they require is 5 minutes of preparation in the evening, allowing you to 'grab & go'.

Here is an example recipe providing 482 calories, 69g of carbohydrate, 25g of protein and 13g of fat.

Ingredients

  • 45g rolled oats

  • 150ml milk of choice

  • 1 medium banana

  • 75g of Greek or Skyr yoghurt

  • 1 tbsp peanut butter

  • 1 tbsp flaxseed

Method

  1. Mash the banana in a large mixing bowl.

  2. Add the Greek yoghurt, peanut butter, oats and flaxseed to the bowl.

  3. Pour your milk into the bowl and mix well.

  4. Transfer mixture into jar or container and leave to set in the fridge overnight.

  5. Grab and go in the morning!
